sAIL camp

I have made a video to explain the project “sAIL camp”.

Context of reference
The diagnosis of an onco-haematological disease represents one of the most impacting and destabilizing events that a person can experience in his or her life.
When they strike, these diseases cause enormous upheavals in every area of the life of those who get sick and those around them.
Paradoxically, even therapies that aim to cure or control the disease transform the body, offend it and force patients to undertake an important job of accepting a body image that has nothing to do with the one they were in. accustomed; and the change does not only concern the physical aspect, also everything that the body is no longer able to do.
Often, albeit in the awareness and in the hope that a large part of the changes may be temporary, the limits are imposed with all their strength.

Within this therapeutic framework, more than in other health care paths, rehabilitation means recovering the sense of control and mastery over one’s history and one’s life project; it means returning to be at the helm of one’s own existence.
Trauma is not the end, the scars created by pain and suffering can become precious textures thanks to resilience, coming out enriched by adversity, continuing to invest in the present and in the future.
It is not a question of “simply” resisting, but of building a new balance by discovering other interpretations and a renewed inner strength.

Needs detected
The gaze turned to the onco-haematological patient highlights the difficulties in having to deal with physical change, with the limits imposed by the disease and therapies and with the confrontation with a project that has become more fragile.
The psychophysical implications of the disease place patients in the condition of stopping, of re-centering, of looking for a new structure, a balance that allows them to regain command of their life path which during the period of the disease is instead guided by therapeutic prescriptions and by close dependence on the help of the other.

General objective
The main objective of the project is to promote a rehabilitation process of onco-haematological patients to return to feel good in everyday life, reinforcing the sense of mastery, autonomy and self-efficacy.

Specific objective
Specifically, the project aims to offer a welcoming, protected and structured space that, far from the hectic pace of ordinary life, can constitute:
• an opportunity to start returning to normal at your own pace and in your own ways
• a context in which to enter into a relationship with oneself and with one’s own experience
• an opportunity to interact with others
• a moment of leisure within a suggestive natural setting

Recipients
Recipients of the project are patients belonging to the departments of Hematology, Bone Marrow Transplantation and Oncology of the Civil Hospitals of Brescia.

Beneficiaries
Direct and indirect beneficiaries will be patients, relatives and hospital ward staff.

Method
The project will be carried out in residential mode, hosting the participants at the Hostel Univela in Campione del Garda. Patients will be offered sports and laboratory activities. Specifically, an excursion on a sailing boat will be proposed that will allow the patient to metaphorically resume the helm of his own life and a walking path that allows the patient to get back on the road by choosing his own personal pace of pace. Some activities will also be proposed that provide an opportunity to explore issues regarding food education held by professionals in the field of nutrition and some food for thought guided by the support of psychologists and educators. The group will consist of a maximum of 8 participants, assisted by the presence of a doctor and a nurse to ensure patients receive adequate health care should it be necessary.
